What Is Periodontal Therapy?
Periodontal disease is a very common, yet very serious oral health disease. Patients with periodontal disease or gum disease must be treated as soon as possible to prevent more severe damage to their health in the future. At Palm Beach Periodontics, we are committed to effective care and treatment of all stages of periodontal disease, utilizing the latest and greatest treatment techniques.
Periodontal therapy is an umbrella term for various procedures and treatments that you may need to undergo. These types of treatments are extremely important in helping you restore your gums and teeth, remove all signs of infection and disease, and prevent future teeth loss and other serious health issues. These types of therapies can include both surgical and non-surgical treatments, depending on both the severity and stage of your periodontal disease. Our Periodontists will work with you to determine the best treatment option for your and your oral health–typically, the non-surgical option is almost always preferred.
Surgical vs. Non-Surgical Therapy
The type of therapy needed for each patient will depend upon the severity and amount of damage inflicted on your gums and teeth. Surgical therapy is needed for patients who have advanced periodontitis and need more intensive surgical procedures to help restore their teeth and gums. Surgical therapies include gum grafting, gum flap surgery, and dental implants, in addition to a few more depending on your unique situation.
Non-surgical therapies include regular, thorough dental cleaning, flossing, scaling and root planing, and sometimes, medication.
